Choice Act

Military-affiliated students who are using VA educational benefits may qualify to use the Choice Act to pay the equivalent of in-state tuition at UNCW.

Students who may qualify for use of this benefit include:

  • Veterans using their benefits
  • Spouses and dependents of veterans using transferred benefits
  • Dependents of active duty personnel using transferred benefits
  • Recipients of the Fry Scholarship

Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31) students qualify for the Choice Act and have their eligibility for the benefit certified through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Students using Chapter 35 benefits will become eligible to use the Choice Act as of the Fall 2022 semester.

When approved for the benefit, a student using the Choice Act remains classified as out-of-state but receives a tuition waiver to cover the difference between the in-state and out-of-state rates. The benefit remains in place as long as the student uses VA educational benefits. Should benefits no longer be available or used, the student loses the tuition waiver and pays at the out-of-state rate unless approved for in-state through RDS.
