Carly A. Wilson
Director of Academic Advising
As the Director of Academic Advising for the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), I strive to support students through the development of effective advising models and implementation of efficient advising strategies. In addition, I aim to embody the CSE Academic Resource Center values of student empowerment, personal advocacy, and educational equity. I began my higher education career working as a hall director in residence life at Old Dominion University, where I earned my graduate degree in higher education. While there, I led a staff of 11 resident assistants and responded to student concerns and crises. I also gained experience in testing services by scheduling and proctoring exams, and the women's center through an internship involving the production and performance of The Vagina Monologues. Upon graduation, I moved to Tucson, AZ and became the Student Activities Coordinator at the Downtown Campus of Pima Community College, where I learned much about the needs of adult learners. Through that experience and my work with the B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, I focused my dissertation research on the experiences of adult learners. I secured my first academic advising role at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, UT working with students pursuing degrees in Communication Studies, History, and Sociology, before moving to North Carolina to accept my first advising position at UNCW. As a certified scuba diver, I enjoy hunting for Megalodon teeth off the coast of North Carolina and I spend my free time watching my twin boys play indoor and beach volleyball.
