Elizabeth M. Walters
Lecturer
Dedicated chemistry educator with over 20 years combined experience. Highly competent teacher familiar with classroom and laboratory environments. Experienced in the development of lecture materials and laboratory experiments. Trained doctoral research chemist in biological inorganic chemistry. Highly experienced in spectroscopic characterization of biological Fe-S catalytic centers and trained in recombinate protein overexpression and purification. Currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and serve as the General Chemistry Coordinator.

Specialization in Teaching
As the Coordinator of the General Chemistry Program, I teach both semesters of introductory General Chemistry (CHM101 and CHM102). I also teach Organic Chemistry I (CHM211) and Inorganic Synthesis Lab (CHML445).
Research Interests
While my position at UNCW does not include research, my personal interests are in the structure and function of metalloenzymes, specifically iron-sulfur enzymes.
Professional Service
I serve my department as General Chemistry Coordinator, represent my department on the UNCW Faculty Senate, and I am the Chair of the Outreach Committee. I serve as the alternative councilor for the local Eastern North Carolina section of the American Chemical Society.
Community Engagement
As chair of the department Outreach Committee, I am responsible for helping to organize and host our demonstration program, Sidewalk Chemistry. This annual event is held in October outside Dobo Hall and is open to all members of the university and community. Mini versions of Sidewalk Chemistry have been implemented at various university celebrations and events.
