Byron R. Toothman

Research Specialist

Byron Toothman joined the NC Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve in 2008 as a Research Biologist. He manages several environmental monitoring programs, including the NCNERR System‑Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP). His research focuses on wetland biogeochemistry, water quality, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding coastal ecosystems and connectivity. He is particularly interested in how natural and human disturbances alter wetland biogeochemical processes and in turn, the ecosystem services that support people and wildlife. Past projects include investigating how invasive macroalgal blooms disrupt the physical and microbial processes that regulate the transformation and movement of mercury through saltmarsh food webs.
