Meja Shoba

Assistant Professor

Meja Shoba is a South African-American Writer/Director and Educator who hails from Oakland, CA and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Meja approaches her work taking a geographic and culturally nuanced look at how circumstance influences and shapes the identity and lived experiences of characters. Her love for storytelling springs from her passion to tell diverse and niche stories and subcultures that reflect her multinational perspective. Her writing credits include Queen Sono (Netflix) and Classified (Amazon).

Her short films, Boys of Soweto, Dear Pearl, and Get There were selected in the Seattle International film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, Berlin Fashion Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival, amongst many others. She is the recipient of the DGA Grand Prize Student Film winner for her short Dear Pearl, and is a Fulbright Scholar.
