Jason E Payne

Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Jason Payne joined the faculty in August 2021 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing. His career spans over 20 years, and his previous academic appointments include The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Nursing and West Virginia University (WVU) School of Nursing. Dr. Payne is a board-certified family nurse practitioner (FNP), and his clinical expertise includes palliative care and hospice, perioperative medicine, and retail health.

Dr. Payne’s research and scholarship interests include health promotion, cardiovascular risk factor reduction, and chronic disease prevention via technology-enabled weight loss strategies. His most recent work in this area includes investigating the effectiveness of social media influencers' content on weight management in middle-aged women , funded through a fellowship with the UNCW Gender Studies Research Center (GSRC) and the impact of adherence to mobile-app-based dietary self-monitoring on weight loss in adults, funded by the Ohio Nurses Foundation (ONF). Additionally, Dr. Payne’s interest in technology-enabled interventions extends to studying technology-enabled student engagement in online courses and psychological safety during simulation. His most recent work in this area includes collaboration on a mixed-methods study to determine the impact of the Simulation Tool to Enhance Psychological Safety (STEPS) tool on psychological safety during simulated learning for prelicensure nursing students. Additionally, Dr. Payne serves as a peer reviewer for several scholarly journals.
