Mary P. Murray
Lecturer
Mary started as a staff nurse on a Nephrology/Dialysis unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC). From there she gained experience in the progressive care unit (PCU) or medical step down (MSU). She began teaching part-time clinical for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) while in PCU. She then became a full-time nursing instructor for Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students for 13 years and gained experience in the classroom, simulation lab, and clinical areas (pulmonary, diabetes, oncology, women’s unit, pediatrics, labor & delivery, post-partum, and cardiac units). She also did clinical research organization (CRO) as a Safety Specialist (SS) at Pharmaceutical Products Development (PPD) for 3 years. There she learned about the phases of clinical trials, reporting severe adverse events (SAEs), and collaborating with people all around the world! Mostly, she is proud to be back in education at UNCW teaching in both the RN-BSN and Pre-licensure programs.
Education
Mary obtained her Doctorate (DNP) at East Carolina University (ECU) and obtained both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). She is honored to give back to the school that has given her a foundation for her nursing career. She is an active member of the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA), the American Nurses Association (ANA), and a member of the Nu Omega, Sigma Theta Tau.
Specialization in Teaching
Throughout her career, she has taught in both pre-licensure nursing in both ADN and RN-BSN programs. She also has some experience in teaching labor and delivery and pediatrics.
Research Interests
Mary's research interests have always been in holistic nursing, treating the patient as a whole (body, mind, and spirit).
Also, since she has been a clinical instructor for over 20 years, her DNP Project focuses on faculty clinical orientation which focuses on their self-efficacy, satisfaction, and retention.
Professional Service
As faculty she involves her service in the school of nursing, CHHS, and university positions when able.
Community Engagement
She enjoys volunteering in the Special Olympics and through her church.
