Michelle McEwen-Campbell

Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. McEwen-Campbell came to UNCW in 2013 with an extensive background in women's health, specifically Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby nursing at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg. While employed there, she served as preceptor for new employees, Co-Director of the Neonatal Nurse Practice Council, Member of the Documentation Task Force, Charge nurse for Women's Services, member of the Nurse Advisory Council, and Childbirth Educator. Dr. McEwen-Campbell loves stepping into the lives of families and sharing in their experience. She became a Legal Nurse Consultant in 2003, and enjoys advocating for optimal maternal/fetal/newborn outcomes. Dr. McEwen- Campbell’s national certifications include Inpatient Obstetrics (RNC-OB), Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) and Certified Nurse Educator (CNE).

Specialization in Teaching

Dr. McEwen-Campbell teaches in both the traditional prelicensure program and the RN-BSN program, specializing in obstetrics, health assessment, and ethical/legal issues. She has a passion for inspiring students and maintaining an environment of nurturing and respect. With over thirty years in nursing and twenty years in nursing education, she strives to provide meaningful, evidence-based learning opportunities in lab, clinical, and classroom settings. Dr. McEwen-Campbell utilizes a variety of pedagogies, including faculty and student-led simulations. She loves experiencing "light-bulb" moments with her students. Dr. McEwen-Campbell considers herself a student advocate.

Research Interests

Dr. McEwen-Campbell’s scholarship interests include patient safety/advocacy, optimal maternal/fetal/neonatal outcomes, nursing and student self-efficacy, and successful learning pedagogies. She has presented research on the international, national, state, regional and local levels.

Professional Service

Dr. McEwen-Campbell is a state board member for NC Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing, serving as Co-Chairperson for the Southeast Region of the state. This involves facilitating and/or presenting relevant clinical information to nurses to promote the health of women and newborns. For 2025, it also involves hosting the State AWHONN Convention in Wilmington.

Dr. McEwen-Campbell is Co-Chair of the annual Nurses Day Celebration held at UNCW each May. This event attracts 250+ nurses in the Southeast Region of NC and raises money for local nursing scholarships.

Community Engagement

In September 2024, Dr. McEwen-Campbell began facilitating an annual Service-Learning Project at a local community baby shower. This was held in a public housing neighborhood due to lack of transportation of most of the participants. Obstetric students educated expectant mothers and their families about preeclampsia, which is highly prevalent in our area. Students reported understanding of the warning signs of preeclampsia and enhanced communication skills with expectant mothers.

Dr. McEwen-Campbell is active in a variety of volunteer services through her church, Pine Valley Methodist Church in Wilmington, including caring for babies and toddlers in the nursery each month, providing hot meals to homeless and socioeconomically disadvantaged citizens every December, providing gift baskets to breast cancer patients, and serving as Camp Nurse at Camp Singletary.

Honors & Awards

In 1990, Dr. McEwen-Campbell was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing- Beta Nu Chapter, East Carolina University. She transferred membership to UNCW's chapter, Nu Omega, soon after coming to UNCW. .

Since 2014, Dr. McEwen-Campbell has consistently received Faculty Recognition Awards for Excellence in Teaching from UNCW's Division of Student Affairs each semester. This honor recognizes faculty members identified by the graduating class as someone who has made a significant impact on their learning and success at UNCW.
