Logan C Kozal
Lecturer
I joined the Biology and Marine Biology faculty as a lecturer in August 2024. I am a marine biologist interested in how commercially important marine invertebrates respond to the environmental stressors associated with climate change. My PhD research focused on the green-lipped mussel, a critically important aquaculture species in New Zealand, investigating the impacts of selective breeding and broodstock conditioning practices on resilience to summer marine heatwaves. I also studied the physiological response of purple sea urchin larvae to stressors associated with upwelling in California within and across generations. In North Carolina, I have worked on eastern oyster with the UNCW Shellfish Research Hatchery studying the resistance of selectively bred oyster lines to summer mortality and disease. I remain an active member of the sustainable seafood community in southeastern North Carolina. As a lecturer at UNCW, I love teaching introductory level biology courses, helping majors in biology related fields build the foundation for their upper level studies and careers and non-majors connect biology to their respective fields and daily lives.
