Emily L. Jones

Assistant Professor

I was born and raised in Oak Island, North Carolina. I currently reside in the small city of Southport. I graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and again in 2010 with a Master of Arts in Environmental Studies. My concentration while in my graduate studies involved environmental communication, education, and interpretation. In December 2016, I graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media from North Carolina State University. My research focused on cultivating and communicating culture in the restaurant industry. Before returning to school for my Ph.D., I worked within the public relations field in the Wilmington area for several years. My positions included public relations, communications specialist, employee relations, media relations, and internal communication. I worked for companies including, the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, UNCW Marketing and Communication Department, and the Cucalorus Film Festival. I was a teaching assistant at North Carolina State University while earning my degree. I taught classes including, media writing, public relations, and public speaking. I am currently an Assistant Professor for the UNCW Department of Communication Studies.

I specialize in teaching integrated marketing communication courses as well as the Communication Studies Discipline Capstone course.

Research Interests

My research interests are the relationship management theory, sport communication, social media, and creating and communicating culture.
