Amelia C. Huelskamp
Associate Professor
Dr. Huelskamp was born and raised in Ohio. She earned her bachelor of science in Physical Education at Ohio University and taught elementary health and physical education before earning a masters in English and then a doctorate in Health Education at the University of Toledo. She joined the faculty at UNCW in 2016 and became program coordinator in 2019. She enjoys hiking, cycling, dancing, and paddle boarding.

Specialization in Teaching
Dr. Huelskamp's teaching focuses on methods and materials of health education. She specializes in health behavior theory and behavior change, as well as methods for teaching health education in the K-12 schools.
Research Interests
Dr. Huelskamp's research focuses on child, adolescent, and young adult health issues. Her research interests include obesogenic behaviors, food access and food insecurity, exercise motivation, comprehensive sex education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her work has been published in the Journal of American College Health, the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Hunger, Innovative Higher Education, Teaching and Learning in Nursing, and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
Professional Service
Dr. Huelskamp has served the profession through multiple organizations, including the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior and the North Carolina Society of Health and Physical Educators. She currently serves as Co-Advisor for the North Carolina Health and Physical Education Student Majors Association. She is editor of the Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research, and she serves as a reviewer for several academic journals, including Teaching and Learning in Nursing and the Journal of American College Health.
Community Engagement
Community engagement initiatives include a worksite wellness collaboration with New Hanover County's Human Resources Department and professional development workshops for New Hanover County Schools. She also serves on the New Hanover County School Health Advisory Council, and offers comprehensive sex education to community organizations, including the Brigade Boys and Girls Club and Girl Scouts of America.
Honors & Awards
Dr. Huelskamp is a recipient of the UNCW Applied Learning Award (2019) and the Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence (2023). She was also named North Carolina College Health Educator of the Year in 2020.
