Mouhcine Guettabi
Associate Professor
Mouhcine Guettabi is the Ronald & Cynthia McNeill Distinguished Professor in Business, Associate Professor of Economics, and Regional Economist at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He monitors the area’s economic indicators and produces economic impact analyses and forecasts. He also frequently speaks to private and public organizations about the area’s economic health and the policy decisions facing the community. Before joining UNCW, he was an associate professor of economics at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). During his time there, he regularly produced economic forecasts, analyzed the state’s finances, conducted analysis on key policy issues, and testified in front of the legislature. His academic research has been published in some of the leading economic journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Regional Science, and the Journal of Health Economics.
He earned his PhD in economics with an emphasis on Urban and Regional Economics from Oklahoma State University in 2012.

Dr Guettabi teaches both undergraduate and MBA students. His teaching interests are broad and his current classes include Regional economics, Intermediate microeconomics, Health policy, and principles of microeconomics
Research Interests
Dr. Guettabi is an applied microeconomist whose research spans multiple subfields, including regional and health economics. His current work employs quasi-experimental methods to analyze the effects of subsidies and economic development using near real-time data. He is also investigating the impact of active labor market policies on mitigating labor market scarring. Additionally, he continues to study the effects of universal basic income.

Community Engagement
As the Regional Economist, Dr Guettabi regularly engage with local businesses, media outlets, and key policymakers at both the regional and state levels. He is often invited by a variety of organizations to provide a detailed update on the state’s economic health. His applied work spans a variety of economic projects, including impact analysis, economic forecasting, and other specialized economic studies. Additionally, he contributes to the public discourse by writing articles for the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, delivering a quarterly economic update for WHQR, and offering expert commentary to the press. On average, he delivers 30 to 35 presentations annually, including numerous keynote addresses. He also engages with local leaders through other mediums such as podcasts, further strengthening my ties to the community.
