Matthew J. Gallek

Associate Director of Academic Programs

Dr. Matthew J Gallek is the Associate Director of Academic Programs and an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing. The goal of his research is to use genetics/genomics to influence nursing care and practice in the management of patients suffering from brain injury. Specifically, he is interested in cerebral vasospasm, which is a devastating complication following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. In addition, he is interested in functional outcomes following subarachnoid hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. During his doctoral studies, he was also a pre-doctoral fellow on a T-32 training grant entitled ‘Targeted Research and Academic Training for Nurses in Genomics’ (NIH/NINR T32 NR009759). In addition, Dr. Gallek was a National Institutes of Health/NINR Summer Genetics Institute Fellow in 2008. He was also a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar from 2012 to 2015. While at the University of Arizona, Dr. Gallek developed a doctoral-level genetics/genomics course. Since arriving at UNCW, he has participated in leadership training within UNCW and through the LEAD program sponsored by the National League for Nursing. In addition, he has taken on many leadership roles within the School of Nursing. These include the DNP Program Coordinator role, the Associate Director Role, and the Interim Director for the School of Nursing.
