Raymond Burt

Professor

I began my teaching and administrative career at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 1986. Although most of my career involved positions in various levels of administration, my main love has been in teaching. I moved my family to North Carolina in 1996, having accepted a position as associate professor in German at UNCW. Here, I taught all levels of German language and culture, and in 2000, helped found the UNC German Studies Consortium, a multi-university arrangement of course sharing. This allowed the creation of the German major at UNCW. My research interests began with German Literature of the Eighteenth Century, and I wrote my dissertation on Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre and the secularization of Pietist autobiographies. A Fulbright Grant to Vienna in 1983 refocused my research on Austrian Literature at the turn of the century and the early beginnings of folklore studies.
Ultimately, my career was shaped by studying abroad in Germany and Austria. I urge all students to take the opportunity to study abroad, as it is one of the most powerful educational and life experiences.
