Deanna D. Benton
Temporary EHRA/Faculty
I am an Atlanta, Georgia native, and my journey with Spanish began back in 2007 as a freshman here at UNCW! Learning Spanish as a second language has truly enriched my life both personally and professionally and I am grateful to be in the position to share this same opportunity with my students.
My career in education began in 2011 as an English teacher and a language and cultural ambassador for the Government of Spain in the Basque Country. I have been teaching lower-division Spanish courses at UNCW since 2013, and during that time also developed curriculum and taught K-8 Spanish in a local Montessori school. Outside of the traditional classroom I have led many educational trekking programs in Costa Rica & Peru for a Raleigh-based company. In the Wilmington community I have served as an interpreter for various social services that provide resources for refugee resettlement, general health care and intensive family therapy.
Outside of teaching I enjoy spending my time with my husband, our daughters, Annabelle and Audrey, and our dog, Woody. We love to go on walks, swim in the ocean and listen to good music!
