Christian Barnes

Senior Lecturer

Christian Barnes has been developing curriculum, advising exercise science (EXS) students, and has taught 23 different courses at UNCW since he began in 1996. He earned his B.S. in Human Movement Science and his M.S. equivalent in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Currently, he teaches two strength and conditioning courses and one lab, each of which prepares students to sit the nationally-accredited, certified strength and conditioning (C.S.C.S.) exam. He is also the coordinator of the exercise-science practicum experience, and is the academic supervisor for two sections each semester of the field experience course. As needed, he also co-teaches a course in applied biomechanics in strength and conditioning. This course complements the other three strength and conditioning courses, with students using electromyography, motion capture, and force plates to help them collect and interpret data, and apply the science of strength and conditioning when designing resistance training, plyometrics, speed, and agility programs. His research interests include use of pedagogical innovations in the classroom and laboratory setting to improve student mastery, and various projects designed to conduct a comparative analyses of commercially available body composition equipment. He is also co-leading the self study designed to prepare the EXS program to be successfully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE).
