December 1 , 2009

Members Present: Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, Provost Cathy Barlow, Dr. Debra Saunders-White, Dr. David Cordle, Mr. Larry Clark, Dr. Karen Wetherill, Dr. James McCann, Dr. Bob Roer, Dr. Mike Walker, Dr. Steve McFarland, Dr. Bruce McKinney, Dr. Dick Dillaman, Dr. Carol McNulty, Mr. William Fleming, Mr. Bob Russell, Mr. Max Allen, Mr. Rick Thompson, and Dr. Kenneth Spackman.

Others Attending: Dr. Johnson Akinleye, Ms. Lisa Castellino, Dr. Terry Curran, Ms. Dana Harris, Ms. Cindy Lawson, and Dr. Nathan Lindsay.

Chancellor DePaolo called the meeting to order at 2:00 pm.

The minutes of the November 3 meeting were approved as posted on the Web.

Chancellor DePaolo announced the long-awaited Board of Governors' November 13 approval of UNCW's revised mission statement, now posted on the planning Web site.

Dr. Curran presented the Fall 2009 enrollment report. Highlights included:

  • A comparison of actual Fall 2009 enrollments with those projected in the Ten Year Enrollment Plan show undergraduate and graduate resident enrollments very close to the targets, while extension totals are considerably greater than expected.
  • Overall Fall 2009 enrollment grew by 2.71% over Fall 2008, compared with the target 2.0% growth.
  • Overall freshman diversity is up (13.09%), though comparison by ethnic category with last year is not easy because of the recent changes in definitions; undergraduate diversity (12.3%) is also up.
  • Freshman high school GPAs and SAT scores are at all-time highs, and SAT scores are at all-time highs in each ethnic minority category as well.

Dr. Curran's presentation also elicited discussion of data related to transfer students, cost of attendance, strategies for attracting and retaining more minority students and for attracting more high-ability students, and the impact of the economy on yield and on incoming transfer students from our region. As of December 1, UNC General Administration has not yet released the latest retention and graduation rates; and because they have also not released official student and faculty headcounts for Fall 2009, the latest student-faculty ratio cannot be calculated yet either.

Chancellor DePaolo challenged members to be prepared in the coming semester to develop the university's next set of strategic goals.

The agenda item on Academic Affairs strategic planning was postponed due to lack of time.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:20 pm.
