WCE Offices Are Renamed

Tuesday, November 02, 2021

The Watson College Office of Academic and Student Affairs, led by Associate Dean Angela Housand has been renamed the Office of Academic Affairs, Program Support and Student Success. WCE’s Office of Teacher Education and Outreach, led by Associate Dean Bill Sterrett is now the Office of Engagement, Professional Learning, and Scholarship. The new names were announced at Watson’s college-wide meeting in October.

The Watson College has three departments that oversee all academic program offerings: The Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education led by Department Chair Heidi Higgins; the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education led by Department Chair Candace Thompson; and the Department of Educational Leadership led by Andy Ryder.

WCE’s two offices support students, faculty and staff, oversee Watson’s on-campus centers and cultivate partnerships and engagement opportunities across campus and in the region.

Academic Affairs, Program Support, and Student Success (APS)

WCE’s newly renamed Office of Academic Affairs, Program Support, and Student Success serves undergraduate and graduate students in all matters related to degree requirements and progress toward completion as well as faculty and program support. This includes student support for admission, scholarships, program matriculation benchmarks, student engagement, and progress to graduation. On the program support side, this includes program planning and development, program data access, reporting to external entities (e.g. USDOE Title II, NCDPI, and US News and World Report), assessment and accreditation, university policy and procedures, course scheduling, and issues related to student assistance and referrals. The office supports and directs critical functions of the Watson College of Education including:

  • Assessment, Accreditation and Data Operations
  • Recruitment and Enrollment Management Support
  • Student Success and Advising
  • Educational Technology

“The name change process was wonderfully collaborative,” Housand said. “The result of that process is a name that is more representative and inclusive of the work of our teams within APS.”

Engagement, Professional Learning, and Scholarship (EPLS)

Watson’s newly renamed the Office of Engagement, Professional Learning, and Scholarship supports students in becoming teachers and leaders in education, and develops collaborative relationships with schools and community partners that enhance teaching and learning in southeastern North Carolina. The office is home to many of Watson’s regional partnerships, on-campus centers, school collaborations and outreach initiatives including:

  • The Professional Development System
  • The Office of Professional Experiences
  • The Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory
  • Watson College International Programs
  • Isaac Bear Early College High School
  • D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy
  • Curriculum Materials Center

EPLS Associate Dean Bill Sterrett explained, “As we have navigated the pandemic together, our learning community has truly benefited from our shared engagement in the work. We have prioritized our ongoing professional learning, and it has been encouraging to see how research and scholarship has continued through innovation and collaboration. Our EPLS name indeed speaks to the important work we are doing…together.”
