Daisyane Barreto is the 2021 Watson College recipient of the Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award. The purpose of this prestigious award is to recognize the varied aspects of excellence in teaching and in teaching-related activities that foster students' desire for lifetime learning and success.

Dr. Barreto is an associate professor in the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education. The award was announced in April.

Carol McNulty has been appointed Interim Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Faculty Affairs at UNCW. UNCW Provost James Winebrake announced the appointment on May 20. Dr. McNulty is an associate professor in WCE’s Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education.

Donyell Roseboro was featured in WILMA Magazine in April, Leading the Field: Insight into becoming an effective leader.  Dr. Roseboro is the interim chief diversity officer at UNCW.

Marilyn Sheerer has been named to the Friends School Board of Trustees. Dr. Sheerer is a professor of educational leadership at the UNCW Watson College of Education. She served as provost at the University of North Carolina Wilmington from 2015-2020. She was featured in a story in Greater Wilmington Business Journal on May 18: New members join Friends School Board of Trustees.

Edel Segovia, ’98, ’12Ed.D. was featured in Hola News on May 7: Edelmira 'Edel' Segovia: Helps overcome challenges. Dr. Segovia is director of Centro Hispano in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at UNCW.

Harris Mulhstein was featured in a story in Algae Research Supply on April 3: Our Interview with Harris Muhlstein. Mulstein is MarineQuest school programs coordinator.

Patrick Kistler Joins the MarineQuest Team
Patrick Kistler joined MarineQuest as the preK-12 Coastal Engineering Associate in May. Serving the Ocean has been Patrick’s passion for as long as he can remember. He grew up on the beaches of the South Jersey shore and moved to Melbourne, Florida in 2017 to attend college at Florida Tech. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys spending early mornings surfing and finding new spots to hike and rock climb outside. He pursued a degree in Ocean engineering and aims to improve the quality of coastal environments through the development of research, education and innovation in the field. Patrick said he is excited for new opportunities at MarineQuest and UNCW and happy to be surrounded by such an inspiring group of individuals. Please join us in welcoming him to the Watson College!

Alumni News

Dylan Chavis ’20 is Union County Public Schools’ 2021 Beginning Teacher of the Year. He teaches social studies at Porter Ridge High School.

Denise-Marie Copeland ’20M has been named Rookie of the Year for The Center of Applied Sciences and Technology (The Coast) in Brunswick County where she teaches 9th grade Academy World History.

Josie El ’15M has been named 2021 Teacher of the Year at Brownsburg High School in Indiana where she teaches English.

Laura Graham ’10M was WWAY Teacher of the Week on May 5. She was featured in a story 'Teacher of the Week' recognized for going above to meet students' needs. Graham teaches third grade at Topsail Elementary School.

Kourtnie Jeffcoat ’14 has been named Teacher of the Year at Heide Trask High School where she teaches English.
