Tuesday, May 04, 2021

Sydney Ross ’21 has been nominated for the NCACTE Student Teacher of the Year Award. The annual award, introduced in 2016, recognizes outstanding future educators nominated by NCACTE member institutions. Ross completed an internship in an NC Demonstration Kindergarten classroom at Malpass Corner Elementary School in Pender County in spring 2021 and earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the Watson College in May.

Associate professor Hengameh Kermani, coordinator of WCE’s Education of Young Children program, nominated Ross for the award.

“This semester, during her student teaching at Malpass Corner, I have had many opportunities to observe Sydney virtually plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons and activities for a group of diverse kindergarten children,” Kermani said. “Her lessons are socially relevant, intellectually engaging and personally meaningful to children. It is so rewarding to hear her partnership teacher, Mrs. Amy Blessing, marvel at Sydney’s ability to engage children in every aspect of their learning. Ms. Ross’ commitment, enthusiasm, creativity, resourcefulness, reliability, and genuine respect for children and their families of all cultures and backgrounds are qualities that will ensure her continued success as an educator of young children.”

NCACTE will announce the winner of the 2021 Student Teacher of the Year award at their Fall Forum which will be held virtually in September.
