The Betty Stike Education Laboratory and Watson College Professional Development System are two of the most long-standing collaborative and outreach initiatives of the Watson College.

The Ed Lab, established in 1985, gives future teachers the opportunity to work with children in a supervised setting on campus before beginning field placements in local school classrooms.  PDS, established in 1993, is a school-university partnership with deep and broad impact across Southeastern North Carolina. The partnership provides WCE students experience working in classrooms and supports the needs of schools and districts in the region.

A recent UNCW story highlights the Ed Lab and PDS teams’ flexibility in responding to a rapidly changing environment for teachers and students throughout the pandemic. The story, which first appeared in the Winter 2021 edition of UNCW Magazine, was also shared on the UNCW homepage in May. The Watson College is pleased to share the story here: A Lifeline for Local Teachers, Watson College outreach programs provide educators vital guidance through the pandemic.
