Congratulations to Isaac Bear Students!

Saturday, May 01, 2021

The Watson College is pleased to share news and updates from Isaac Bear Early College High School.

Forty-five Isaac Bear students participated in the 2021 Southeast Regional Science Olympiad held virtually in February and early March. The varsity team went on to place eighth out of 100 schools competing in the state finals in April.

Ella King earned second place in the For-Profit Enterprise track of the Chancellor’s High School Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, held in April. IBECHS juniors Alisha Fariz and Justin Guo earned third place in Social Enterprise track of the competition for their entry, “Gaming irl.” As an outgrowth of the competition, the students are partnering with UNCW’s Esports Club to offer a two-week virtual summer program called Gaming in Real Life where high school students can develop leadership, communication and critical thinking skills through team-based gaming.

Winners of the Chancellor’s competition were announced in a UNCW home page story on April 30: Investing in the Future: Winners of Chancellor’s High School Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Announced

On April 29, Isaac Bear tenth grade students were given a walking tour of campus by UNCW’s Admissions Office, where they scouted out the locations of their fall courses and stopped to perform a few experiments in Dobo Hall’s new Chemistry Labs before having lunch at Wagoner Hall. During the visit, Chemistry faculty members Heather Corpus and Richard Lancaster shared their new state of the art equipment, and Department Chair Paulo Almeida and Professor Antje Almeida personally showed students around the new labs in Veteran’s Hall.

Congratulations to IBECHS Upperclassmen and May 2021 Graduates!

Isaac Bear Early College students in the 11th and 12th grade had an average cumulative GPA of 3.53 this spring, and 58 students made the Dean’s List for the spring semester.

On May 19, graduation was held at Minnie Evans Performing Arts Center on the campus of Ashely High School for IBECHS’s 56 seniors. Thirteen members of this year’s graduating class will return to continue their undergraduate studies at UNCW in the fall.
