WCE Launches Strategic Initiative, ‘Charting the Course’

Sunday, January 12, 2020

The Watson College of Education is embarking on a journey to chart a course for the future, using Appreciative Inquiry and SOAR as the methodology to engage a broad range of stakeholders in a dynamic strategic direction setting process. The goal of the initiative is to identify strengths and opportunities that lie ahead, and aspirations that will guide the work of the college and provide a framework for navigating the future.

The Watson College “set sail” in the process with a “Charting the Course, Navigating the Future” summit on January 7. Eighty-five faculty and staff members participated in the full-day event. Working in small groups led by volunteers and members of the WCE Leadership team, participants shared success stories, envisioned possibilities and developed provocative propositions that could help position the college to capitalize on strengths and opportunities.

Additional reflective meetings with PDS partners, alumni, students, community organizations and other stakeholder groups are planned in the coming months.

“Higher education is in a time of tremendous change and colleges of education are certainly no exception,” said Watson College Dean Van Dempsey. “Our original focus was to prepare future educators for their work in P-12 classrooms. While that is still central to what we do, our role has expanded as the world around us has changed. Early childhood programs now focus on birth to kindergarten, higher education programs prepare professionals for success in community colleges and university settings, and our Instructional Technology programs prepare individuals for careers in virtually any field. Similarly, our partnerships have expanded beyond schools and school districts to include universities, community colleges, businesses and community organizations. Our degree and credential programs range from undergraduate to doctoral education. The Watson College now has a role in preparing educators for lifelong teaching and learning in virtually any setting where teaching and learning occurs.”
