Nearly 100 Teachers, Fulbright TEA Scholars Participate in BT Conference at Watson

On February 22, the Watson College welcomed nearly 100 teachers to the second Beginning Teacher Conference Day of the year. The group included ten Promise of Leadership Award recipients from WCE’s partnership districts and twenty Fulbright TEA Scholars visiting UNCW from around the world. 

Christina Spears was keynote speaker at the event. In a presentation titled Hip-Hop, Passion and Leadership, she used use hip-hop, one of her passions, to introduce participants to culturally relevant pedagogy, discussed use of Twitter and other online platforms for professional learning and networking. Spears is a former high school Special Education teacher and current Special Assistant in WCPSS Office of Equity Affairs.

Beginning Teacher Conference Days are offered through WCE’s First Years of Teaching Support Program. Assistant PDS director Jenn Knight coordinates the FYTS program.
