Sydney Fox Named NCCSS Student Teacher of the Year

Friday, March 02, 2018

Watson College senior Sydney Fox has received the North Carolina Council for the Social Studies 2018 Student Teacher of the Year Award. The award, which comes with a $1,000 scholarship check, was presented at a luncheon at the NCCSS Annual State Conference in Greensboro on Feb. 8.

Fox will graduate in May with a degree in Elementary Education. As an undergraduate student, she completed field experiences in three counties, self-published a children’s book and served as a co-researcher with WCE faculty member Cara Ward on a study of the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898. She also partnered with Lisa Buchanan, associate professor of elementary social studies, on a Betty Holden Stike Research Award project. Fox’s role was to collect data to analyze the fictional picture book collection in WCE’s Ed Lab.

Buchanan nominated Fox for the NCCSS award. “Sydney has a record of outstanding scholarship and commitment in our program,” she said.

Fox said she was honored to receive the award, and looks forward to engaging her future students with a social studies curriculum that includes mirrors and windows.  “Mirrors include stories that are familiar because they reflect our lives and experiences, and windows are stories that help us grow, because they introduce a perspective that’s different than our own,” she said.

Fox is currently completing an internship at Kenansville Elementary School in Duplin County, where she works in a second grade classroom with partnership teacher Erica Edwards.

“Teaching is truly a profession that chooses you and teachers are the individuals that change the lives of every child they teach,” Edwards said. “Sydney is one of those individuals that makes it look easy. She makes learning fun for her students while maintaining the integrity of the content she is teaching. As Sydney prepares for the next step in her career I can only see greatness. Greatness in what she does every day for her students and what she will do in her own future in the years to come.”

Fox is the third Watson College student to receive the NCCSS Student Teacher of the Year Award. Previous winners are Charlotte Locke ’16 and Anamarie Neville ’17.
