60 Students Participate in ‘Extreme Science’ Day at WCE

Wednesday, November 01, 2017

Sixty Watson College students participated in an Extreme Science Day event on Nov. 21. The students used ProScope microscopes, visited CESTEM’s digital planetarium and learned to use math to scale the solar system in a series of activities designed to show ways to help children understand size and scale.

Amy Taylor and Lynn Sikma planned the event in partnership with CESTEM. Maggie Guggenheimer, Chris Gordon and Michelle Hafey joined Taylor and Sikma in providing the hands-on science and math stations.

The participating students are all seniors, enrolled in WCE’s Elementary Education program. This fall, they completed Block field experiences in elementary schools in Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover Counties. The Block experience is a mini-internship that pairs pre-service and in-service teachers for a full semester. The Block provides a cohort for WCE Elementary Education students to complete five methods courses while getting more than 150 hours of classroom experience during the semester prior to their final internship semester.

Block field experiences are led by WCE faculty members Amy Taylor, Lynn Sikma and Katie Schlichting in partnership with Belville, Lincoln, Cape Fear, College Park, and Town Creek Elementary Schools.
