Hundreds Gather at Watson to Watch the Solar Eclipse

Sunday, September 10, 2017

WCE’s Center for Education in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics partnered with the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education to plan a solar eclipse viewing celebration at the Watson College on Aug. 21.

Nearly 1,200 people from across campus and the Wilmington community participated in the event.

Festivities got underway in the early afternoon with educational exhibits in the atrium and solar telescopes, stomp rockets and other family-friendly activities in the courtyard outside. CESTEM provided 600 pairs of eclipse viewing glasses and EEMLS provided eclipse-themed snacks, including Moon Pies and Sun Drop.

In the days leading up to the event, EEMLS chair Kathy Fox and CESTEM interim director Chris Gordon shared informational websites and activity guidelines with Watson College faculty and students.

“This year, we had a rare opportunity to experience a nearly total solar eclipse and we wanted to connect the event to educational practices,” Fox said. “Our goal was to show our students ways we can weave learning and science together through activities and events that are both memorable and fun.”

Phyllis Pierce, EEMLS administrative associate and Michelle Hafey, CESTEM program associate, helped Fox and Gordon plan and manage the event.

A video of the eclipse was produced by the media production team in UNCW’s Office of University Relations. View more photos on the Watson Facebook page.
