90 HS Students, Teachers Attend Practice AP Statistics Exam at WCE

Thursday, June 01, 2017

Eighty high school students and 10 teachers from Carteret, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender Counties participated in a practice AP Statistics test at the Watson College on April 29. The practice exam, created by a team of statisticians and high school teachers and administered at a variety of sites across the country, reflected the two-section format of the actual exam with both multiple-choice and free response questions.

“Our goal was to give students an authentic test day experience in order to maximize their potential for success on the AP exam,” said Ginger Rhodes, associate professor in UNCW’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Participants were provided with formulas and probability distribution tables that will be included on the actual exam and participating teachers were trained on the rubrics needed to grade the free-response portion of the test.

“AP teachers who participated in similar events at other universities said the experience to score an exam with an experienced AP Reader was extremely beneficial,” Rhodes said. “We wanted to provide the same opportunity for teachers in our region.”

Ginger Rhodes coordinated the event, in partnership with UNCW Statistics faculty member Indranil Ghosh, NC State statistician Jonathan Duggins, and Laney High School AP Statistics teacher Sharon Sterken.
