WSLs Promote Teaching and Community Engagement

Thursday, November 03, 2016

The role of Watson Student Leaders is to serve as ambassadors and represent the college through leadership, professionalism and service. This fall, WSLs helped promote the college and the teaching profession at recruitment and outreach events including Seahawk Saturday and UNCW’s Career Carnival.

They also held workshops for students attending WCE’s Future Teacher Conference, greeted prospective students at UNCW’s Graduate School Open House and welcomed guests to WCE’s alumni reception.

A planned trip to Atlanta over fall break was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew, but the WSLs stayed busy! The students sported navy blue T-shirts with a new Watson Student Leaders logo as they volunteered in the community throughout the fall; activities that included painting a playground at the Child Development Center in October and participating in the “Big Sweep” beach cleanup project. WSLs also mentored freshmen in UNCW’s Education Learning Community and helped Watson College Dean Dempsey conduct student surveys about teaching prior to his panel appearance in October on the new TV program Education Matters.

LeAnne Smith, director of WCE’s Office of Student Advising and Integrated Leadership, coordinates the Watson Student Leader program. For more information, visit uncw.edu/ed/wsl or visit them on Facebook.
