WCE Welcomes 22 Freshmen to the ELC Class of 2016-17!

Saturday, September 03, 2016

This fall, the Watson College welcomed 22 freshmen to the Education Learning Community (ELC), located in Tri-House.

The ELC was created in 2014 to provide first-year education majors a residential learning community that supports academic, social and educational development. Through the ELC, students have the opportunity to live with other pre-education majors, connect with Watson faculty and staff, attend seminars and participate in education field experiences prior to being admitted into the Watson College of Education.

Eleven students participated during the first year of the program, and 19 joined the ELC class of 2015-16. Many have volunteered to mentor incoming freshmen this year.

A welcome breakfast for new ELC students and their mentors was held Aug. 16 at the Watson College, and ELC’s joined their mentors on a low ropes challenge course on Sept. 12. A Bubble Soccer event is planned in October, and three freshmen will join Watson Student Leaders on a trip to Atlanta over fall break.

The ELC program is coordinated by Leanne Smith, director of WCE’s Office of Student Advising and Integrated Leadership. For more information, visit www.uncw.edu/ed/elc.
