Nearly 1,000 Students Participate in Regional Science Olympiad

Monday, April 11, 2016

Nearly 1,000 middle and high school students from Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties competed in the 2016 Wilmington Regional Science Olympiad on March 5 at UNCW.

Seventy student teams demonstrated their skills in 46 activities designed to enhance their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Many activities, including the engineering competitions and the closing awards ceremony, were held in Trask Coliseum. Other activities were held in the Education Building, in Bear, Dobo and DeLoach Halls and on Hoggard Lawn.

The Center for Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CESTEM) at the Watson College of Education coordinates the Wilmington Regional Science Olympiad in partnership with campus and community volunteers from General Electric, Corning, New Hanover County Schools, the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Health and Human Services.

Chancellor’s Message about the 2016 Regional Science Olympiad

In a letter to faculty and staff on March 8, UNCW Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli wrote:

This past weekend saw thousands of young scientists, their parents and local and regional educators descend on UNCW for the annual Regional Science Olympiad. Led by our devoted faculty and staff at WCE, the event has become a terrific jewel in the UNCW crown, effectively pairing our commitment to STEM education with our commitment to community engagement. I hope many of you were able to check out the event in person, but if not, you can catch a glimpse of it here and read more about it here. Congratulations to all who contributed to this spectacular event (and to those whose children took home honors!).

CESTEM director Dennis Kubasko was featured in a story about the Wilmington Regional Science Olympiad in Encore Magazine on March 1. www.encorepub.com/flying-high-local-students-take-flight-in-Wilmington-science-olympiad/
