WCE Hosts Retired Faculty Luncheon

Wednesday, November 04, 2015

Watson College Dean Van Dempsey and associate deans Carol McNulty and Ann Potts welcomed retired faculty to a luncheon at the Watson College on Nov. 13.

During a presentation following the lunch, Dean Dempsey acknowledged the rich history of the college and invited retired faculty to play an active role in helping current faculty and staff be good stewards of the history, define strengths and aspirations for the college in the future and build closer connections to alumni that now number more than 6,500.

Attendees responded enthusiastically to the invitation and offered a wide range of ideas and recommendations.

Lee Knight, UNCW’s director of planned giving and Kevin Thompson, WCE director of development in UNCW’s Division of University Advancement, joined 25 retired and current WCE faculty and staff at the luncheon. “This is the most productive event of its kind I have seen in my entire career,” Knight told the group as the gathering came to a close.

“Our retired staff and faculty are essential members of the Watson College of Education,” Dean Dempsey said following the meeting. “They embody in their experiences and accomplishments much of the history of the College that in part allows us to enjoy the reputation for excellence and impact that we see today. As such they are stewards of our history and our sense of continuity, and we value and respect their legacy. The strengths of the College, and our aspirations for the future are built on their contributions.”
