60 Teachers Participate in the First Years of Teaching Support Program at WCE

The Watson College of Education supports its graduates in the first three years of their teaching career through the First Years of Teaching Support Program. The program, managed by WCE Professional Development System (PDS) director Somer Lewis, provides online resources and face to face support for teachers and administrators. The college also hosts a series of professional learning days for beginning teachers each school year.

Sixty teachers participated in a beginning teacher professional development day at the Watson College on Nov. 6. Katie Snyder ’08, ’12M, New Hanover County Schools’ 2015 Teacher of the Year, was keynote speaker at the event. She delivered an inspirational presentation titled “I Teach. What’s Your Superpower?”

Watson College faculty and New Hanover County teachers partnered with Lewis to offer a series of breakout sessions for the teachers during the full-day event:

  • English Language Learners in NC Schools: What You Need to Know, Allen Lynn
  • Homework as a Differentiated Practive, Kathy Fox
  • Tools for Teaching, Marcia Kearns Merkle and Leslie Pridgen, New Hanover County Schools
  • Leadership: What Is It and How Can You Get Involved?, William Holmes
  • Playing Indian: Myths, Stereotypes and Misrepresentations of American Indians in Schools, Susan Faircloth
  • Using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Assistive Technology (AT) to Increase Students with Disabilities Access to the General Curriculum, Allison Jones, Terri Collins and Amy Moody
  • Writing Across the Curriculum and Common Core, David Gill
  • The 25th Hour: Time Management for Classroom Teachers, Somer Lewis
  • Building a World-Reflective Classroom, Amy Garrett Dikkers
  • iTeach with Google, Jeff Ertzberger and Salena Rabidoux
  • Integrating CESTEM Resources from the FREE Technology Loan Program, Dennis Kubasko
