MarineQuest and Engineering Camps begin June 14

Friday, May 08, 2015

UNCW Youth Programs offers MarineQuest and Engineering & Robotics programs for school-age youth, and is pleased to announce several new programs and program expansions this year.

MarineQuest is extending its pipeline to include preschoolers for the first time!

Small Fry 1_001

Small Fry (ages 4-5) is a new camp designed specifically for the youngest marine scientists. The children will spend a week learning all about the different stages of a fish life cycle including the fry, a young fish that is able to feed itself. They will explore different habitat nurseries and learn about fish parenting strategies.

Engineering Expectations is offering new camps and program expansions!

Enchanted Engineering (ages 6-7) is a new camp based on problems encountered by characters in popular fairy tales. The children work cooperatively to come up with creative solutions for these problems using the engineering design process. One example for this summer's camp will be using engineering to help the three little pigs outwit the big bad wolf.

Computer science and engineering camps will be expanded to include the use of Raspberry Pi and Arduino systems. Led by experts from the Department of Computer Science, these camps will encourage children to work cooperatively to tackle creative challenges. Campers will take home their systems at the end of the week.

Youth Programs is pleased to provide a new engineering camp for young ladies selected by the new charter school initiative, Young Women Leading. Last year, YWL sent a group of girls to MarineQuest's Sea Angels camp. This summer those same girls will attend an engineering camp while a new cohort of girls will become Sea Angels.
