WCE Department of Educational Leadership faculty members Bill Sterrett and Scott Imig partnered with Green Schools Initiative executive director Deborah Moore to study schools that have been awarded U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) distinction.

The ED-GRS initiative was introduced by the U.S. Department of Education in 2012 to recognize schools and districts that strive for 21st century excellence by highlighting exemplary practice and resources that all can apply. To qualify, schools must offer programs that reduce environmental impact and costs, improve health and wellness, and provide environmental education that includes STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

The researchers surveyed leaders of ED-GRS schools and districts to determine the challenges and benefits involved in leading green efforts.

Sterrett, Imig and Moore authored an article about their work titled “U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools: Leadership Insights and Implications.” It was published in the peer-reviewed online Journal for Organizational Learning and Leadership in December.
