Assistive Technology Enhancements

In 2008, the Watson College of Education received grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education to build an inventory of equipment to support the needs of local schools, community agencies, caregivers and individuals with disabilities. Today, WCE’s Center for Assistive Technology (CAT) serves as a community resource and lending library, offering hundreds of items ranging from iPads to braille readers and robots. Devices and software may be used free of charge for 30 days. CAT also offers consulting and advisory services, equipment demonstrations and workshops.

Amelia Moody, CAT director and associate professor of special education, is pleased to announce new technology and equipment available for loan including wireless iPad switches, eye gaze software and Nao robot activities for K-12 users.

She said the group hopes to encourage more people to take advantage of the program by making it more convenient. CAT recently updated the lending library website to showcase available equipment that can be checked out online, and the group is partnering with CESTEM to offer expanded hoursto facilitate on-campus pick up and return of equipment.

Through its lending library, the Center for Assistive Technology gives people an opportunity to “try before you buy,” a particular benefit when it comes to technology and other high-ticket items. The center also allows individuals to borrow equipment.

The lending library can provide services for a variety of needs - a teacher looking for an instructional aide for a student with autism, a parent who needs to borrow equipment for a child temporarily disabled or assist someone who is experiencing hearing loss.
