Watson College Honors Five Razor Walker Award Recipients

Razor Walker Award recipients

Since 1993, the Watson College of Education has presented Razor Walker Awards to honor individuals and community organizations throughout North Carolina for their vision, service, courage and dedication to making a difference in the lives of young people.

The prestigious service awards are given in the categories of Art/Literature, Business, Educational Administration, Law, Medicine, Philanthropy, Public Service/Policy and Teaching/Research.

Five individuals were recognized during a special ceremony May 1. In his opening remarks, Dean Kenneth Teitelbaum said he was “in awe, inspired and encouraged” by the accomplishments of this year’s honorees, their nominees and more than 160 guests, many of whom were previous honorees.

Award recipients and presenters for 2014 are:

Sheri L. Carroll, medical director for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; award presented by Barbara Buechler, ’09, administrator of NHRMC’s Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

J. H. Corpening II, district court judge for New Hanover County; award presented by James H. Faison III, ’13, district court judge for Pender County.

Stephanie Fanjul, who helped lead the creation of North Carolina’s Smart Start; award presented by Tannis Nelson, ’03, past president of the North Carolina PTA.

Peter D. Hans, chair of the UNC Board of Governors; award presented by Thomas Ross, president of the University of North Carolina system.

Jack Viorel, founder of Indo Jax Surf Charities; award presented by Diane Evers, Watson College of Education Alumni Board member.
