At just 11 years old, Kaela Coles ’24 started working with her family’s non-profit organization, 4 Day Movement, to support her surrounding community. 4 Day Movement, a faith-based 501(c)(3), was founded in June 2013 by Coles’ father with the mission of helping those who have fallen through the cracks, especially the homeless.

“We strive to empower those experiencing homelessness or displacement, guiding them forward toward transformed lives and sustainable, permanent housing,” she said.

A communication studies major and entrepreneurship minor, Coles now serves the organization as the outreach and marketing representative. She credits UNCW for providing her “both the communication expertise and business acumen needed to contribute meaningfully to the nonprofit sector,” she said.

And meaningful work they do, offering food and fuel assistance, short term and emergency lodging, and resource referrals. One goal the organization is striving toward is the development of a multipurpose facility to support women, children, veterans and people recovering from addiction.

A proud UNCW graduate, Coles recalls how her time in college prepared her for life beyond school. She participated in Upperman Center events and served as the social chair for the Black Women’s Association.

“These experiences contributed to my growth, confidence and passion for making a positive impact in my community,” she recalled.

In October 2024, the Coles family got the opportunity to share their story on "The Jennifer Hudson Show." Coles wrote to the show, saying how having the chance to speak in front of a live audience and sharing their mission with TV viewers was “truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” The Coles family has always been close, but working together to create lasting change in the community has brought them even closer.

“I am honored to be part of a family that serves others so selflessly, showing love and respect to everyone we encounter,” she said.
