Melissa Green, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) liaison in UNC Wilmington’s Research Integrity Office (RIO), has earned the Certified IRB Professional (CIP) credential from Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R). The CIP is a widely respected certification for IRB professionals and reflects advanced knowledge of IRB functions and a strong commitment to protecting human research participants.

The CIP credential acknowledges an IRB professional’s broad understanding of IRB functions, underscoring that Green is well equipped to ensure research oversight aligns with U.S. regulations and prevailing ethical codes.

Earning the CIP credential requires meeting rigorous eligibility criteria, demonstrating extensive knowledge of IRB policies and regulations and passing a comprehensive exam.

“On behalf of the UNCW research community, I want to extend my congratulations to Melissa on her outstanding professional achievement. This nationally recognized certification reflects her deep expertise, unwavering commitment to ethical research practices and her dedication to supporting students and faculty at UNCW. Melissa’s work is instrumental in advancing research excellence across our campus, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate this milestone with her.” - Stuart Borrett, associate provost for Research and Innovation.

One of three research compliance specialists in RIO, Green is responsible for managing the human subjects protection program, supporting the campus IRB and reviewing human subject research protocols for compliance with federal regulations, institutional policies and ethical standards.

In addition to human subjects, RIO promotes research integrity by managing other critical research compliance programs including responsible conduct of research training, conflicts of interest, animal welfare, foreign influence and export controls.

Green has been a member of the UNCW RIO team since 2022.
