Big news for campus logins! Microsoft Authenticator is now available as an alternative to Duo, offering a faster, smoother, safer and more innovative way to log in to campus services.
With Microsoft Authenticator, you can sign in without a password and take advantage of your device’s built-in features, such as Face ID, Touch ID or Mobile Device PIN, for effortless authentication.
Even more exciting, widespread use of Microsoft Authenticator brings us closer to offering a 365-day password at UNCW. With continued adoption, we expect to deliver this improvement before the end of the year.
Why Switch to Microsoft Authenticator?
- Seamless integration with Microsoft 365 and campus applications.
- Innovative login options: Supports passwordless login and device-based authenticators, such as Face ID, Touch ID, Mobile Device PIN.
- Enhanced security: More secure than SMS text or voice calls, which will be phased out.
Important Notes
Very few applications, such as Remote Desktop and High-Performance Computing, are not yet supported by Microsoft Authenticator. For these, please continue using Duo.
With the introduction of Microsoft Authenticator, there is also a small change to VPN access. Two separate VPN URLs are now available, allowing you to choose whether you authenticate using Duo or Microsoft Authenticator. Please review our VPN knowledge base article for detailed instructions.
What is Passwordless Authentication?
Passwordless authentication lets you sign in without typing a password. Instead, it uses other two-factor methods such as biometrics, device-based authentication or hardware keys. Microsoft verifies your identity by combining something you have, like a registered device, with something you are or know, like a fingerprint, FaceID or PIN. This creates a secure login experience without ever entering a password.
