Annual Employee Notice - Secondary Employment Requirements

Annual Employee Notice - Secondary Employment Requirements

This message serves as the Office of Human Resources annual notification about secondary employment requirements for full-time SHRA employees who plan to engage in secondary employment with another employer that is not the University.

The purpose of UNCW’s 08.120 Secondary Employment policy is to ensure that an SHRA employee’s secondary employment does not have an adverse effect on the employee’s primary employment with UNCW and does not create a conflict of interest.  A full-time SHRA employee must notify their supervisor, submit a Request for Approval of Secondary Employment Form, and obtain supervisory approval prior to engaging in secondary employment.  In addition, an employee who is continuing to engage in secondary employment must submit an updated Request for Approval of Secondary Employment Form to their supervisor annually.  Information about the policy is available at 08.120 Secondary Employment.

Secondary employment includes any activity involving the production or sale of goods, the provision of services, the performance of intellectual or creative work for pay in either an employer/employee relationship or in a self-employment capacity such as an independent contractor.

The supervisor must assess the impact and ensure that secondary employment does not:

  • Create a direct or indirect conflict of interest with the employee’s primary employment; or
  • Create any possibility of conflict with State operations; or
  • Impede the employee’s ability to perform all expected duties and responsibilities of their position.

Any full-time SHRA employee who has, or who is planning to engage in, secondary employment must complete a Request for Approval of Secondary Employment Form by no later than close of business on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.  Full-time SHRA employees who do not have secondary employment do not need to complete a form.

EHRA Faculty and Non-Faculty employees are subject to UNC Policy 300.2.2.1[R] and Policy 03.230 Conflict of Interest or Commitment.

If you have any questions about this, please call the Office of Human Resources at 910-962-3160 or e-mail humanresources@uncw.edu and someone will assist you.
