Celebrating its second year, the Research Speaks Conference on October 30 was a great success, featuring research presentations, poster displays, panel and roundtable discussions from over 30 dedicated Watson College faculty members. The annual conference, hosted by the Office of Graduate Education, Professional Programs, Faculty Affairs and Research, focused on its simple but powerful theme: "Sharing Innovation, Partnership, and Scholarship."

The conference commenced with welcoming remarks from WCE Associate Dean Symphony Oxendine. “Today is more than a conference, it’s a gathering of visionaries and change-makers," Dr. Oxendine noted. She emphasized the importance of connection, challenging attendees to "step out of your comfort zone. Please strike up a conversation that could spark a new idea or partnership; ask bold questions; and look for inspiration in unexpected places.”

The event successfully showcased the depth of scholarship across the college. Faculty presented their projects through diverse formats, including lightning presentations, poster displays, roundtable discussions, and panel sessions, effectively sparking new ideas and laying the foundation for future collaboration and partnership among colleagues.

A focal point of the event was the recognition of outstanding scholarly achievements. Professor Michele Parker was honored as the recipient of the inaugural Watson College of Education Research Excellence Award. Furthermore, the college acknowledged Dr. Julia Lynch and Dr. Nirmal Ghimire, who were celebrated at UNCW’s Research and Innovation Celebration for publishing the highest volume of peer-reviewed articles over the past year. Dr. Oxendine praised their hard work, noting their contributions "not only elevate the reputation of our programs but also inspire colleagues and students to pursue rigorous inquiry and innovation."

Dr. Oxendine concluded the formal session by reaffirming the college's commitment to cultivating its scholars. She acknowledged that the passion demonstrated throughout the conference—where curiosity met commitment—is what ultimately drives innovation and shapes the future of education. She encouraged faculty to build meaningfully on the momentum created: "I hope you’re leaving today feeling energized, more connected, and full of ideas worth carrying forward. Let’s keep the conversations going and continue building on the momentum we’ve started together."

Following the conference, participants expressed high praise for the insightful and motivating morning of sharing, appreciating the opportunity to learn from colleagues and acknowledging the significance of the new Research Excellence Award.
