Yan Liu has been selected to serve as WCE’s inaugural Faculty Fellow for Research, a position created to support faculty, promote research collaboration and enhance scholarly activities in the Watson College.

Dr. Liu is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, coordinator of WCE’s Master of School Administration and School Administration Add-on Licensure programs, and an internationally recognized scholar specializing in large-scale data integration for educational research. She joined the faculty at UNCW in 2021.

“Dr. Liu’s excellent track record in research productivity, mentoring graduate students, and grant writing will facilitate her work as she seeks to expand the research supports in the college,” said Watson College Dean Tracy Linderholm in announcing the appointment.

Liu said she was motivated to apply for the position because she is passionate about the role researchers play in shaping academic communities and advancing educational practices.

“The opportunity to contribute to the development and expansion of research initiatives at WCE is incredibly exciting,” she said. “I see this role as a chance to engage meaningfully with faculty, graduate students, and other researchers to create an environment where research can thrive and be recognized for its impact. Additionally, the opportunity to guide and mentor emerging scholars is something I deeply value, as I believe that sustainable college success relies on nurturing the next generation of scholars. I am eager to join a team committed to strengthening the research culture at WCE.

During 2025, Liu plans to focus on four key research initiatives:

  • Structured Mentorship ProgramThis new program, designed to support early-career faculty, will match junior faculty members with more seasoned WCE faculty researchers who can provide guidance on research design, publication strategies, and professional development.
  • Newsletter – Liu has created a bi-weekly newsletter to share updates on ongoing research, highlight achievements, and provide information on upcoming opportunities and events.
  • Research Speaks – WCE will continue to host an annual event providing researchers an opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas, and receive feedback. This will be complemented with a new Research Excellence Award to annually recognize one outstanding researcher in WCE, whether through publications, innovations, or influence on education practice.
  • Writing Support & Mini Research Speaks – Throughout the year, Liu will host monthly writing support sessions integrated with mini "Research Speaks" events, focusing on specific topics to help researchers write while encouraging collaborative discussions around particular research areas.

At WCE’s college-wide meeting on March 19, Dr. Liu encouraged faculty members to share publications for the newsletter, participate in writing sessions and the annual Research Speaks event, and to reach out if they have specific research initiatives and ideas they would like to discuss.

“Although I’m no longer a new faculty member, I understand how challenging it can be to maintain research momentum, especially in the early years,” she said. “It’s a lifelong challenge for many of us—balancing teaching, research, and everything else that comes with academic life. I’m passionate about helping others navigate these hurdles and want to create a supportive environment at WCE where scholars at all stages feel empowered to keep going, collaborate, and succeed. Research is my passion, and supporting others in maintaining their momentum is something that drives me.
