UNCW’s Center for Education in in Science, Tech, Engineering and Math (CESTEM) hosted the Southeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair on February 15. The event provides an opportunity for third through 12th grade students to showcase their STEM-related work, with winners advancing to state and international competitions.
This year, 85 students from New Hanover, Pender, Onslow and Duplin Counties participated in the regional competition. The event was supported by 45 school and community volunteers, including many who served as judges. Two new special awards were given to students this year, sponsored by the New Hanover County Farm Bureau and MarineQuest. In addition, during the fair, units from across campus showcased their programs to students and families and provided fun activities at their tables during a designated time.
A total of 27 projects were nominated to participate at the North Carolina State Science & Engineering Fair in Raleigh in March.
“The Southeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair recognizes the hard work and the innovative ideas explored through our students’ research projects,” said Heddy Clark, Director of the Region 2 Science and Engineering Fair & Director of STEM Education & Engagement. “Participating in science and engineering fairs shows students countless possibilities, offering a platform to showcase creativity and solve real-world problems. It's not just about winning, but about learning, growing, and inspiring future researchers."
Gianna Geiss Feder, CESTEM Administrative Associate and Michelle Hafey, CESTEM Program Associate partnered with Clark on event planning and coordination.
The North Carolina Science Fair Foundation (NCSFF) sponsors the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair. The Southeast Regional Fair is held annually on campus, with support from volunteers, teachers, and local fair coordinators throughout the region.
