Rachel Greer is the new Executive Director at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy. In this role, she will work closely with leadership, staff, and personnel to offer essential support and strategic direction for the school. Greer will guide the implementation of a wraparound model in partnership with Watson, which focuses on addressing the holistic needs of students and their families. In addition, she will oversee budget development, policy creation, and the promotion of academic achievement and instructional excellence.

Ms. Greer has served as interim director at Virgo since January 2024. She assumed the director’s position in September.

“We are very excited to have Rachel in this key role at D.C. Virgo,” said Watson College Dean Tracy Linderholm. “Her experience as a former Principal and Instructional Coach have equipped her with a deep understanding of school administration and instructional leadership. Over the past several months, she has been instrumental in guiding D.C. Virgo through several key transitions. Rachel’s leadership will be pivotal as we continue to strengthen our educational community and ensure the success of all our students.”

Greer began her career as a middle school teacher in California. After moving to North Carolina in 2004, she served in the roles of elementary teacher, English as a second language teacher, lead teacher, North Carolina Principal Fellow intern, assistant principal and as a principal in Lincoln County and New Hanover County Schools for nine years. In 2021, she joined the Watson College Office of Engagement, Professional Learning and Scholarship as an Instructional Coach for the North Carolina New Teacher Support Program.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to work alongside educators with such passion for the profession and enthusiasm for innovation,” Greer said. “It is with much anticipation that I look forward to continuing collaborative efforts with our students, families, staff, community and university partners as we strive to honor the legacy of our namesake, David Clarke Virgo, in the pursuit of ensuring a school experience of academic excellence, leadership development, and community engagement.”

For nearly 60 years, D.C. Virgo has educated students, served area families and helped to strengthen the downtown Wilmington community. In 2018, Virgo became a UNCW school through the UNC System Lab School Initiative which pairs Colleges of Education with local schools to enhance student learning and provide high-quality teacher and principal training. A year-round school serving K-8 students, today Virgo aspires to represent two powerful forces – innovation in education and community partnership – joining together to better serve a new generation of students.
