Katie Riley ’24 is the recipient of the Exemplary Intern Award for an intern in an undergraduate degree program. Katie earned her degree in the Education of Young Children program. The award was presented at WCE’s spring 2024 teacher intern celebration seminar on April 29.

Hengameh Kermani nominated Katie for the award. Dr. Kermani is coordinator of WCE’s Education of Young Children (EYC) program and Katie’s internship supervisor.

“From the time she entered the program, Katie has demonstrated a commitment to reflective practice, actively seeking feedback for her own personal growth and development,” Kermani said. “She has remarkable skills in designing engaging and interactive learning activities that encourage creativity, exploration and active participation for her students.”

In her nomination, Kermani wrote that Katie effectively prioritizes her students’ intellectual progress and demonstrates a sincere commitment to their social-emotional development. Her classroom is an anti-bias environment that acknowledges and values the children’s languages, customs, and traditions in learning activities.

“She is certain to experience much success as an educator of young children!” Dr. Kermani said.

WCE’s Office of Professional Experiences hosted the spring intern celebration. The Professional Experiences team works with Watson faculty and site coordinators in WCE’s Professional Development System partnership schools to coordinate thousands of field experiences and hundreds of internships for Watson College students each year. The placements give WCE students the opportunity to experience a variety of supportive, professional settings during their educational journey, while gradually assuming the responsibilities of a classroom teacher.
