More than 800 middle school and high school students from the surrounding counties of Brunswick, Columbus, Johnston, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender participated in the 2024 Wilmington Regional Science Olympiad on March 9. WCE’s Center for Education in in Science, Tech, Engineering and Math (CESTEM) sponsors the annual event in partnership with schools and campus and community volunteers.

Science Olympiad is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition for students in grades K-12. The tournament consists of a series of hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are balanced between the disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology.

“There are 36 events running all day across campus,” said Michelle Hafey, CESTEM Program Associate. “We could not host this tournament without the support of our wonderful volunteers.”

Top Division B regional finishers were: Wilmington Academy of Arts & Sciences, St. Mary Catholic School, St. Mark Catholic School, Murray Middle School, Classical Charter Schools of Leland and Topsail Middle School. Top Division C regional finishers were: Hoggard High School, Isaac Bear Early College High School, Ashley High School, North Brunswick High School and Laney High School. These teams will go on to compete in the 2024 State Tournament on the NC State campus April 12-13.

North Carolina Science Olympiad (NSCO) hosts regional competitions on university, community college and public school campuses across the state each year.
