Megan Brown is enrolled in WCE’s Elementary Education program with a concentration in Behavioral Studies. Originally from East Bend, North Carolina, she said a favorite teacher drew her to the teaching profession.

“I chose to become a teacher because I had an Elementary teacher who believed in me when I was struggling in math,” she said. “She chose to keep pushing me and took time to help me. She is an inspiration and I aspire to just be half the teacher she is.”

“Wilmington has always felt like a home away from home,” she continued. “It was no question after meeting professors in Watson that I would attend Watson College of Education. The professors at the college made that feeling of home away from home more true. They are kind, supportive, and will always be some of your biggest cheerleaders!”

Megan will graduate in May after completing an internship at College Park Elementary School, and said she feels well prepared to begin her teaching career.

“My professors have shared what they are passionate about and taught me what it means to be an effective teacher,” she said. “My time spent in the field prior to internship was very enlightening and fruitful. I was able to visit different schools in the county and see how each individual school runs and see their visions at work. I was able to gain much knowledge about the career I was pursuing as well as build relationships with students and staff members so I could be successful and aid students learning.”

Megan said the Hattie M. Strong Scholarship was a great help during her internship semester.

“The Hattie M. Strong Scholarship award means a lot to me,” she said. “The scholarship has aided me to be successful as I have been able to fully devote myself to my internship this semester. The Internship experience has been rewarding as I have been able to form my teaching philosophy and put it into practice. I am beyond thankful for the opportunities having this scholarship has offered me!”
