Isaac Bear Early College High School won the high school division of the New Hanover County Schools Battle of the Books (BOB) competition on March 27. The IBEC team will advance to regional competition in April.

Eleven students participated on the inaugural IBEC BOB team, led by co-captains Khloe Le and Rebecca Shook, and coaches Danielle Talbert, Leyna Varnum and Melissa Raymer. Talbert and Varnum are English Language Arts teachers at IBEC and Raymer is an Education and Art Librarian at UNCW’s Randall Library.

“Props go out to the students who organized and worked their beautiful minds to a victory!” Raymer said. “Thanks to my co-captains for helping steer the ship, Danielle Talbert and Leyna Varnum.”

“This collaborative effort was born out of some truly wonderful conversations last year,” Talbert said. “I am so grateful to work with Leyna and Melissa as we continue to positively impact our students' experience. Together, we have had the chance to continue building our UNCW partnership; however, the best part has been the chance to watch our students step up into leadership and form an outstanding team this year...our first EVER!! This is an awesome win for our Bearhawks!”

In addition to Khloe Le and Rebecca Shook, participating students on the IBEC BOB team are Averil Boren, Vedika Gadikota, Violet Harris, Peyton Imperial, Lillian LaQuay, Lydia Le, Linna Lin, Caroline Merrifield and Ryleigh Patterson.

The North Carolina School Library Media Association sponsors the Battle of the Books program for students aimed at promoting a love of reading and familiarity with the best in literature for young people. Students at participating schools read books from a list established by the state Battle of the Books committee and then compete in quiz-bowl-style tournaments to test their knowledge of these books. For more information visit the Battle of the Books website.
