Mark Mormando has been exploring the use of AI by high school students and teachers. An article he authored on the topic was published in EdNC on January 31.

Mormando is enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education program at the Watson College of Education, where he also works as a graduate assistant in the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education. He recently completed a field experience at Eugene Ashley High School.

“When I started my field experience as a student teacher, I was not surprised when some of my students openly admitted to using artificial intelligence (AI) to complete their classwork,” he wrote. “Students of the 21st century, and specifically of the Class of 2024, have an incredible tool at their disposal, and while most educators can almost predict its presence in their classrooms, I was curious to learn how teachers viewed – and potentially used – AI as well.”

Mormando conducted a survey of teachers at Ashley High School to learn more. He received a wide range of responses to questions related to student use of AI. Still, nearly 70% of teachers responding to the survey reported that the same technology could at least save them a “moderate amount” of time if used properly.
